Recycle your Bicycle

Recycle your bicycle is an independent volunteer and nonprofit organization started by Harold Hosein in April 2003 to collect unwanted bicycles and parts and send them to Cuba, thus diverting them from our landfill sites and putting them to good use.

April 2004, 2 containers were shipped. 150 bikes went to Moa, and the remaining bikes, and parts, went to Holguin.
July 2004, 1 container was sent to Holguin. In total, about 900 bikes were delivered in 2004. Some of these have gone to an orphanage in Holguin, some to the Teachers Training College, and the rest distributed in the community. The bikes collected have been a variety of sizes from tricycles up.

May 2nd 2005, another container was sent to the Medical College in Las Tunas. This container was loaded with about 250 bikes, which were all repaired, some computers and typewriters, used clothing and shoes, medical text books, and mathematics, engineering and science text books suitable for high schools and university, sewing machines and other household material.

November 5th 2005 we loaded another 40 foot container destination Holguin and Las Tunas.

Loading of container #5 went very well because of all the efficient helpers. Even though we had a long walk to the container, and we stuffed HUNDREDS of bags of clothing and shoes, like we never did in the previous containers, we finished in good time. Total loading time was from 10am to 3pm with a lunch break. Special thanks goes out to Papa Ceo of 654 Spadina Avenue (416) 961-2222, who provided us with an excellent Pizza Lunch

November 19th 2005, loaded another 40 foot container which was destinated for Moa, over 200 bikes, 33 new matresses, clothing, computers, bicycle parts and much more. Pizza lunch and hot coffee provided. Loading was completed within 4 hours thanks to the competent volunteer crew.

March 25, 2006, loaded container, destinations: Delicias, Las Tunas, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba, with about 200 bicycles, computers, 1200 pairs of shoes, 300 bags of clothing and many boxes containing housewares and books, and toys.

May 2006 20 foot truck to Pilon, we emptied out our warehouse, and shipped clothing, bikes and other house wares to the region still recovering from the Tornado.

May 18 thru 20, 2007 parked a 40 foot highcube container in the parking lot of Jensen Tire in Oakville, with a distination: Holguin, Las Tunas, and various other places for distribution.

May 10 2008, container # 10 was loaded with 220 bicycles, assorted parts, such as bicycle tires and wheels. This container will be transported to Holguin, and the cost of shipping the container is being paid by The Orion Foundation through its Cuba Project.

Our sincere thanks to the Canadian Tire Families Foundation, the City of Toronto and all of the volunteers who came out on such short notice.

We are aiming for a minimum of 2 shipments for next year. Starting in the spring of 2006 with plans to fill yet another container with is destinated for Delecias.
